While I was absent with Covid this week and missed color theory, my instructor as well as several of my classmates reached out to check on me! They shared notes we went over and assured me that they'll get me caught up soon after I return!

We just wrapped up our first week in color theory. I was so excited to get to color. I learned so much about the color wheel & we learned virgin hair application and highlighting techniques.

This second week of school was a fun, laid back kind of week. We got to practice scalp treatments, pedicures, manicures, makeup, and facials. While practicing these, I became closer with my classmates and got to know each one of them better. Ms. Randi is always up to let us choose our own partners but I love that she sometimes makes us draw names which allows us to have a chance to branch out. I am making so many friends in the process of it all. Since Christmas was coming up, our class decided we would each bring a plate of food to school and have lunch as a class. We had so much fun and even shared with the other students and some of the staff we passed on the way back to class. Every time I walk into this school, I leave with much more than 10 new memories with the staff and students. I can’t wait to make so many more, especially with my future clients! If you would’ve asked me a year ago today if I’d be here I would’ve told you absolutely not. I never thought I would be so happy pursuing a career in cosmetology and now I am absolutely positive that there won’t ever be anything out there that makes me happier this right here. It is such a blessing to be here. This pace is full of love and it felt like home the second my feet hit the floor inside.

  • This week has been amazing! Week two began spa week! It was great getting to return to my massage therapy roots a bit. I would say that the facials and mani's/pedi's were my favorite. It was nice to slowdown and help my classmates and I to relax. What some may not realize is that on this journal it is fast paced and you are learning something new everyday! So it's easy to get a bit overwhelmed. However Miss Randi and Michelle are wonderful at reassuring and encouraging us. I also have phenomenal classmates who encourage me as well. I honestly believe that's the beauty in it all. We aren't there to compete against one another rather build each other up and push one another to be the best we can. It's awesome to be at a school where the passion to see students thrive is so strong!

My 2nd week of beauty school aka Spa week. We did scalp treatments. MUD also came by and showed us how to apply makeup and then we did each other's makeup. Thursday was mani/pedis on each other, followed by facials on Friday. Let me tell you how excited I am to know once I graduate I can offer any of these services to the public!!

What is the TSB Experience?

It’s knowing that you’re attending a school that has graduated generations of beauty professionals. Since 1930, TSB has been the
premier choice for an education in the beauty industry.

It’s knowing that five generations of the Brown family have run the school since 1930. Beauty is in our DNA.

It’s knowing that more than 1,000 TSB grads have gone on to open their own salons thanks to their TSB experience. It’s our grads coming back to give demonstrations for our students on the latest techniques and tips.

It’s knowing that TSB works hard to stay at the forefront of our industry. We were the first beauty school in the nation to offer
online testing. We’re a Redken Premier School which offers exclusive benefits for our students. We were the first stand-alone satellite school for MUD (Make-up Designory), where the classes that you take with us can transfer to MUD’s NYC and LA campuses. We are among the first beauty schools in the nation to have an app. We’re the only school in Tennessee to offer a laser and paramedical esthetics program. And one of a handful of schools to offer lash certification.

It’s knowing that our instructors will provide you with a first-class educational experience from day one. From theory to hands-on
experiences, you’ll learn more than just the basics.

It’s knowing that school isn’t all work and no play. From our famous Halloween contest to photo shoots to monthly theme days, we make learning fun.

It’s knowing that giving back is important. We love our community and enjoy being able to support some pretty amazing causes like the Suicide Prevention Network, American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Clubs, and John Tartleton Home.

It’s our experience that we’ve gained from training more than 20,000 graduates that we can pass along to you. We’ve worked hard to find the best and most effective ways to prepare our students for long-term success in the beauty industry.

It’s knowing that not only have many of our graduates gone on to open their own salons and spas, but that all of the area schools have at least one TSB grad as an instructor.

It’s knowing that all of our students aren’t the same and finding ways to inspire and teach each of you to do your best.

It’s knowing that you’ll have time on the floor of our student salon, where you’ll hone your cut and color skills under the supervision of our instructors. Practice makes perfect.

The TSB experience is all of this and more. We invite you to join the TSB family and create your own TSB experience.

As a TSB student, you can take part in experiences like this photoshoot with Mary Harris at salon biyóshi.

About the Shoot – The Art of Hair

For 8 straight days the students got an amazing opportunity to work with the well renowned Hairstylist and salon owner Mary Harris from Knoxvilles Salon Biyoshi.

Mary and her salon hold many titles and awards for their work, ranging from editorial shoots, print work, movie/tv shows, as well as competing in, placing in and winning of many national and global competitions. With Marys knowledge, experience , talent and work ethic, she has chosen to mentor these students and prep them for what this side of beauty industry is like.

Over the span of this class- these students are logging in 8 hour days on top of regular school, work and home life to be apart of this once in a life time opportunity to learn from the best. Mary has taken these students on a true journey to help guide and coach them to tap into their creativity.

Given two options to invoke their creativity- the students were able to choose Garden of Eden or Masquerade as their inspiration

Working with 9 groups of students that include 2 hairstylist, 1 MUD certified makeup artist and a model in each group- Mary had planned out an 8 day agenda ending with a professional photoshoot with her photographer, Brian, who has worked with Mary on countless shoots, sets, print work and competitions.

Beginning with Day 1 – what to look for in a model, creating Vision Boards of what inspires them, what they hope to achieve while creating a cohesive but avant-garde look. Days 2, 3, 4 Mary had shared her talents on how to prep hair for shoot work, blowdrying, upstyles, hair manipulations, making hair pieces and creating head pieces. Mary had professional models come in and work with our groups models on how to pose and be comfortable in front of the camera. The MUD students also had the opportunity to practice different looks on their models. Days 5 and 6 Mary supplied her own wardrobe she uses for sets and shoots for our students and models to find a look that was cohesive with their themes and visions. All students got to work on creating their wardrobe, finishing hair/head pieces and make up looks to get a final idea on the overall finished look. Days 7 and 8 – We took time to have a celebration breakfast and take in the moment of all the hard work, time and effort each of these students have put in this past week

These days we did a trial run of overall look and ended our week with the actual photoshoot where Mary and Brian worked on set with each group individually to help create the best possible version of their vision to make it come to life.

This whole experience is life altering and eye opening. TSB is beyond grateful for Mary, her time, her vision and her guidance. She volunteered her own time to help give back and mentor our future stylists and we couldn’t be more thankful. Mary has impacted this industry and now has forever impacted and changed these students lives.
